The only working shelter program in Jefferson County, the Action Center shelter provides emergency housing for men, women, and children in single, couple, or family units. The shelter program has operated since 1985. A newly built facility was dedicated in May, 1997, and provides private sleeping quarters, community dining and recreational areas, laundry facilities, and access to personal and medical services at Jeffco Action Center's main facility. Clients must be employed, may stay up to 45 days, and are expected to develop a self-sufficiency plan while they are in the shelter. In 2006, the shelter provided 291 clients with 5,845 client nights of shelter and 17,535 prepared meals. Clients are expected to work during their stay in the shelter. This way, they can save up their wages to move into their own home at the end of their 45 day stay.
